As you can see from the previous ansewrs, nobody can predict exactly. However, I do think some of these other ansewrs are too conservative and are based on the conventional wisdom rather than personal experience.I recently had a big increase in my score by doing what you are talking about dramatically improving my debt to credit ratio (the amount oed part of your scredit score how much you owe as a % of how much total credit is available to you). I went from low 600 s to low 700 s in 2 months. My biggest concern for you is that your score of 568 is a bit low. If it is low because of some late payments it will take you longer to establish a good score. Your payment history accounts for 35% of your score and is the biggest factor. Your amount owed is 30% of the score it is the second biggest component and as you can see while still significant it is not as important as payment history. A good idea wold be to get hold of your credit report (you can get a free copy once a year) and make sure your low score is not due to any mistaken entries you can get cleaned up.

The Federal Trade Commission offers free acecss, and you don't need a credit card. You are entitled to one free copy of your report from all three major credit reporting agencies each year.

If you don't have any credit to begin with you won't get a best one. You'll get the tbootm of the barrel one that will most likely charge outrageous interest rates. For a first time credit card, get one at a department store and build your credit this way. Get it built up pretty well until you have a few department store cards and keep a good payment schedule. Give it about 6 months to a year to build up good credit with these cards and then keep paying them off, then charging small amounts and then paying them off again. Do that, don't try getting a major credit card without any credit, you will hate the company or bank you signed on with and yourself for going for it anyways.I did just that and pretty much screwed up my credit, now it's much better.
