All of my hives have different petaonslries . I view each hive as an individual entity though made of thousands of individuals. Some start early, some stay out late, some do both. Some work harder than others. I am starting to think that personality plays a role in survival of the luckiest . With chickens and bees I have witnessed it. Some bees begin work earlier than others, just as some chickens refuse to go in the coup at dark. Those slight differences in personality correlate into different survival profiles. Depending on which one is more successful, different groups will survive. Survival of the fittest is a POOR way of relating it. Much more has to do with LUCK. Great bees pick a tree to live in . It gets hit by lightning and falls over into a creek and drowns .. A chicken refuses to go into the coup and a raccoon gets into the coup and kills all of the chickens in there!?! Crazy, but it has happened.At the end of the day the one that works best in the given situation/environment will succeed. Hope this is what you meant by generating conversation . Hope it doesn't turn into controversy . It's just the way I see the world.

Just found your website. I think what you are doing is wdenorful. My father was stationed near the lighthouse with the Coast Guard during WWII. He spoke of it many times. The lighthouse keeper introduced him to beekeeping. When I can locate the black and white photos he took of the lighthouse during this period I will send them to you.
