Hi John,Thanks for the comment.I think you and I are on the same page reirdagng redeploying excess workers. I probably was not clear enough, so The excess worker comment has to do with the traditional operator balance/optimal crew size analysis activity. Often folks will develop or enhance standard work and determine that the optimal crew size is say X, but then leave the present crew size at the X+1 or X+2, etc. This is because they don't want to upset the apple cart and redeploy the excess workers. True lean transformations provide employment security, especially in light of productivity improvements (downturns in business are a whole different story). However, employment security does not equal job security as in a person is guaranteed their same specific role forever. Sooner or later, organizations must confront this situation and handle it honorable and forthrightly. The traditional lean way to handle redeployment as such is to move the best performers out of the crew to another position, sometimes this is temporarily the kaizen office pool, where the redeployed folks work on kaizen.Best regards,Mark
